How to pay

In person you can pay by Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit or prepaid card, debit card, certified cheque or money order in Canadian dollars, or a government department cheque. By mail you can use a credit card, an embossed prepaid card, a certified cheque or a money order. IRCC does not take cash or personal cheques. Cheques go to the Receiver General for Canada 1.

Only online renewals can be paid online. You cannot pay online for an application sent by mail or made in person 1.

Applying from outside Canada

IRCC has a separate fee page for Canadians outside Canada and the United States. When we checked on 19 October 2026 its fee amounts did not load. The page says adult passport payments include a C$25 consular fee, refunded if no passport is issued, and that most applications take 20 business days. Abroad you can pay online by credit or debit card and print the receipt, or pay at an embassy or consulate 3.

The Passport and Other Travel Document Services Fees Regulations set a base fee of C$235 for a 10-year adult passport, C$165 for a 5-year adult passport and C$100 for a child passport requested outside Canada (current to 21 September 2026). The in-Canada page totals are higher than the base fees in the same regulations, so check the IRCC fee list for the amount you will pay 4.

How to renew or apply

You can renew an adult passport instead of applying for a new one, which means no guarantor, proof of citizenship or supporting ID. Online renewal is available if you need the passport in 20 business days or more. Child passports cannot be renewed and need a new application each time 2.
