French passport fees in 2026

French passport fee table

You pay the fee by buying an electronic tax stamp before your appointment ¹. The amounts below come from Service-Public, the official French public service site ^1,34.

Renewal

Renewing an adult passport costs the same €86, or €43 in French Guiana ². Abroad, the renewal stamp costs €96 ². The new passport is valid for 10 years ².

Urgent passport

France has no paid express track for the normal passport. In a real emergency, such as a serious illness or death in the family or an unplanned work trip, a prefecture can issue a temporary passport ⁴. It is granted only in exceptional cases ⁴.

The temporary passport needs a €30 tax stamp bought online and proof of the emergency ⁴. It is valid for one year ⁴.

How to pay

• Online on the official tax stamp service, or at the end of the online pre-application ^1,5
• At a tobacconist (bureau de tabac) that sells electronic stamps ⁵
• The stamp is valid for one year from purchase ⁵
• At a consulate abroad you can pay cash, and some consulates take card, cheque or bank transfer ⁵

Processing times and how to apply

You apply at a town hall (mairie) with a fingerprint station, and many town halls require an appointment ¹. You must attend in person for fingerprints ¹. An online pre-application is optional ¹.

The passport is made elsewhere, so it is not handed over on the day. Waiting times depend on the place and the season and get longer before the summer holidays ¹. You must collect the passport within three months or it is destroyed ¹.

Applying from abroad

French citizens abroad apply at an embassy or consulate and pay €96 for an adult passport ¹. In Australia, Canada, Spain and Portugal, some adults can renew without going to the consulate if they still hold their passport, got it at 18 or older, and it expired less than five years ago ².
